Current Research Topic

  • Problem:
Medical diagnostic reasoning is a complex cognitive task and therefore highly vulnerable to errors (10-15%), causing severe fatal injuries. Knowledge improvement or cognitive de-biasing strategies to counter errors do not decrease this rate. Simulating experience gains in an interactive learning setting to increase error detection and correction skills was designed to decrease cognitive diagnostic errors.
  • Research Questions:
Is observational learning as fruitful as failing by the person him/herself? How is the impact of feedback connected to erroneous observed actions? Does the general concept of diagnostic competence framework need to be reworked to incorporate error detection skills?
  • Results:
Observational learning is a possible compensation for lacking experience. Providing peer feedback to the observed student had detrimental effects on own performance if it is superficially done. Error detection skills seem to be a distinct construct from diagnostic knowledge, highlighting the importance to incorporate it into the diagnostic competence framework of today.
