"Improving Burnout and Attrition in Teachers: A Motivational Perspective"

Time: 16.06.14, 4.15 p.m. - 5.45 p.m.
Venue: Room 1305 in Leopoldstr. 13

Abstract

Following from troubling statistics showing up to 50% of teachers to quit within their first 5 years of instruction, the present talk will outline recent findings from a 2013 longitudinal study of 526 Canadian teachers exploring the links between motivational and emotion variables and both personal and professional outcomes. In addition to traditional motivational constructs such as self-efficacy and causal attributions, the talk will also highlight the effects of teachers' goals, social comparisons, and emotions on instructional practices and student engagement, as well as burnout, job satisfaction, quitting intentions, and illness symptoms. Findings on the long-term effectiveness of a brief motivational program for teachers encouraging adaptive causal attributions will also be presented, as well as directions for future research on promoting well-being and performance in teachers from a motivational perspective.
