Abstract: Much has been made of the importance and necessity of educating students in ways that support “deeper learning” and the development of critical “21st century skills.” Included on the list are labels such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, information literacy etc. But what is deeper learning and what are these so-called skills and competencies, how do we develop them in the course of formal and informal education, and how do we know if students have attained needed levels of proficiency? This presentation will consider what the cognitive and learning sciences bring to this discussion. Central to the discussion is consideration of the concept of transferable knowledge and skill – the Holy Grail of education. We will consider what theory and research has to say about the nature of transfer and how we develop and assess such capacities in and through disciplinary education focused on core ideas and practices. The discussion will extend beyond the domain of Cognitive competency to include issues of developing and assessing critical competencies in the Interpersonal and Intrapersonal domains as well.
