Lecture by Prof. Jacobson: "Beyond Serious Games"

Prof. Michael J. Jacobson from the University of Sydney, Centre for Research on Computer Supported Learning and Cognition has visited in mid October the Munich Centre of the Learning Sciences. He met with professors and doctoral students from diverse disciplines and discussed with them his research.

23.10.2012

Prof. Jacobson gave a talk on “Beyond Serious Games: Computational scientific inquiry with agent-based virtual environments for understanding complex biological systems”. In his talk he presented an agent-based virtual environment, which has been developed by his team.  It consists of an immersive virtual world for experiencing and exploring a complex ecosystem as part of "virtual" biology fieldwork. He discussed findings from a recent study in which grade 9 students used this virtual world over a two week period to engage in computational scientific inquiry. Implications of this approach were discussed as well as plans for new collaborative international research to further develop this computational scientific inquiry approach for learning science in formal and informal learning environments.
