REASON Retreat in Bernried am Starnberger See

Measurement, domain-specificity and mathematical proof in scientific reasoning and argumentation

04.03.2020

The first academic REASON retreat of the cohort 2019 took place from March 4th to March 6th 2020 in Bernried am Starnberger See. The agenda included supervisory meetings, as well as poster and presentation sessions, where all doctoral candidates of the new REASON team discussed the current status of their doctoral projects.

Further highlights of our three-day retreat were the in-depth sessions on relevant aspects of scientific reasoning:

  • The role of domain-specific and cross domain aspects in scientific reasoning and argumentation held by Prof. Frank Fischer (LMU)
  • Mathematical proofs and proving processes held by Prof. Stefan Ufer (LMU): from domain knowledge to scientific arguments – insights of a study in mathematics education
  • Measuring scientific reasoning: longitudinal findings from kindergarten to secondary school held by Dr. Christopher Osterhaus (LMU)

Christopher presented recent findings from longitudinal studies on scientific reasoning from kindergarten to elementary and secondary school. He discussed that children’s scientific reasoning abilities in kindergarten may be predictive of later competencies, including their content knowledge in physics. These findings highlight the importance of fostering scientific reasoning from early on, and they suggest that domain-general scientific reasoning skills may be necessary to test and revise (naïve) theories about the world.

and essential issues in the academic community:

  • Open Science Information Session led by doctoral candidate John Silva (planning ahead when publishing anonymized data sets)
  • Career Insights held by Prof. Sabine Pankofer (KSH)

The event was also an optimal opportunity for the newly formed team to get to know each better and to clarify the administrative steps ahead in the doctoral studies.

We are very much looking forward to our next retreat together!
